South Miami

The citizens of today’s South Miami call it “The City of Pleasant Living”. In fact, it was honored with the All-American City award in 2001. But, the City of South Miami’s recorded history actually began as early as 1896. An early pioneer, W.R. Larkins, brought his family into the area, and in 1906, he bought the land east of 57th Ave. and south of Sunset Drive. Larkin established the first grocery and general store. After the US government opened the post office within the town, the area was officially named Larkins. Over the next 20 years, the area and population grew quickly; as did the Larkin citizens desire to have their community incorporated into its own municipality. In 1926, the citizens had their way, and a 6 sq. mile area was incorporated into the Town of South Miami.

Between the destruction caused by the hurricane of 1926, and the lack of State and Federal assistance and attention to the Town’s needs, its citizens set out to have the “Town” officially changed to “City” by the Florida Legislature. The “City” of South Miami was established in 1927.
Managing the land and number of citizens of such a large area proved overly burdensome. As such, over the next 10 years the City of South Miami was reduced in size twice, to its current size of 2.309 sq. miles.
Despite its early evolution, enormous growth, and continuing redevelopment, the City has striven to keep to the vision of the early pioneers, a town with a small town feeling regardless of its size. Live here among the 12,000 or so South Miami citizens and you too can feel the love.
